Intermittant notes on what I'm up to.
March 3rd 2002
Long time no update :
- Upgraded beer with two hard disks - nice IBM Ultra-160 LVD SCSI
models. I thought I was tripling the capacity, but it's more than that
actually (18 -> 90 GB is a 5X improvement come to think of
it!). Anyway, here's a
link the IBM page for them. I would be careful buying from that
page. It's not clear, but they only sell the 9gig model at the
moment. I found the 36gig kind for less money via Pricewatch - in fact a grand
total of $442.69 for the both including tax and shipping from computergiants
- To drive an LVD Ultra-160 drive you need an lvd capable
controller. I use the Tekram
DC-390U2W which works nicely with the NCR53c8xx driver and has
backwards compatibility to older scsi types (it has the internal
ultra2/lvd connector, the regular 68-pin ultra-wide internal
connector, a 50-pin internal SCSI-2 connector and an external 68-pin
ultra-wide connector - really that's enough for many, many cases). I
had to set the jumpers myself even though the SCSI BIOS on the host
adapter suppports SCAM ("SCSI Configured AutoMatically").
- Installed rsync on
tweety for Nick's project.
- Finished off my World Trade Center
Tribute.
- Added account and webspace for for Ken Rossman's stuff.
I could't say if SCSI is strictly worth the money, but beer now has
the following peripherals all working smoothly (never a hiccup) :
Internal
- 4 hard disks (2 40MB/s 9GB UW, 2 80MB/s 36GB ultra-160 lvd)
- zip drive
- cd-rw drive
- tape drive
External
- flatbed scanner
- negative scanner
- 24X external cd-rom
and there is still room for expansion (there's a completely unused
external 68-pin ultra-wide scsi connector for a start!).

Some recent stuff :
- Replaced dumpster with tweety (AMD Athlon Thunderbird 750MHz,
192MB RAM, 40GB HD).
- Upgraded several machines to slackware 8.0
- Installed GNU Mailman for testing to support canalplan mailing
lists.
- Installed KVM switch for controlling several different PCs under
my desk.
- Installed Rune full version (ordered direct from Loki Games) -
also have Tribes 2 not even installed yet. Blasted through about 8-10
levels so far.
- Rearranged computer room to give Barbara more room to sit at her
desk.

Updated Linux setup page.
Changed top-level page to give equal billing to Nick's pages as my
own (he gets more hits than me!). This means the default page is about
as small as possible. Anyone who comes here a lot can obviously
bookmark whatever they like.
Fixed some references to old email addresses.
Reset Leon's password by request.
